Jack Hatch has taken part in debate in the Iowa Senate. But he's never debated an opponent before a statewide audience, and at the Iowa State Fair.
Hatch, the Democratic candidate for Governor, spoke to reporters at the fair just prior to checking out the Cattle Barn at the Iowa State Fair, where the Iowa Public Television debate will take place. It is the first of three debates with Terry Branstad that the incumbent's campaign has agreed to take part in before November.
Hatch expressed some frustration with the debate format, since he says it won't allow any rebuttals to any of Governor Terry Branstad's statements at the one-hour event. But he says there won't be a "knockout moment" at the debate, and he's hoping only to increase his name recognition and bring his message to those who watch and listen to the debate.
